Eating meat is good for you, just cook it right and cut the fat. It might be physiologically possible to live without meat, but eating lean cuts in moderation does have its benefits. It provides us with essential nutrients in particularly easy-to-absorb form and the negative press so often attributed to meat — that it is high in saturated fats and calories — is not necessarily borne out in practice.

Humans can pass on diseases to animals after all, say scientists. Scientists have uncovered the first-known example of human bacteria infecting an animal species. Researchers at Edinburgh University have traced a serious infection in poultry back to a single human-to-animal jump. It occurred about 38 years ago, possibly in the region of Poland. The process is the first to be discovered in the 10,000 years since animals were domesticated.

Asda has potentially risked the wrath of ethical food groups and the celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall by launching a £2 chicken promotion. The Wal-Mart-owned grocer – which this month unveiled a transparency drive including web cams in its carrot washing and processing factories – said it would be prepared to extend the idea to the journey the £2 chickens make from farm to supermarket shelf
