The village farmer’s market is going high-tech in its battle against the supermarkets by launching a website that allows shoppers to stroll around virtual stalls and buy artisan produce. The site, which launches on New Year’s Day, employs the 3D technology used for developing video games to bring the virtual market to life. At first it will have 45 stalls selling condiments, meat, cheese, fish, soups, sweets and oils but it expects to showcase more than 100 in the future.

A co-op worker was stunned to open his wage slip to find the company had accidentally paid him a staggering £1.4million. After realising the mistake Stephen Foster, 31, quickly notified his bosses - who rewarded him with a £10 crate of Budweiser beer and a bottle of champagne.

A parliamentary inquiry today heaps blame on ministers and officials at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for continued bungling over the payments made to farmers after reform of the Common Agriculture Policy four years ago. The poor and complacent oversight of the £1.6 billion-a-year cash paid to English farmers is considered so “wholly unacceptable” that the department has been given until the end of next month to deliver a plan to overhaul the system, which is the responsibility of the Rural Payments Agency.
