Growers in the Rhubarb Triangle around Bradford, Wakefield and Leeds, are aiding the fight against cancer, new research has revealed. Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University have found baking British-grown rhubarb for 20 minutes can dramatically boost its levels of anti-cancer chemicals. The findings, published with the Scottish Crop Research Institute and funded by the Centre for Food Innovation, showed the chemicals, called polyphenols, could kill or prevent the growth of cancer cells.

A top Italian food writer has been suspended indefinitely from the country’s version of the television programme Ready Steady Cook for recommending stewed cat to viewers as a “succulent dish”. RAI, the public broadcasting network, said that it had dropped Beppe Bigazzi, 77, for offering the recipe on La Prova del Cuoco, which is broadcast at midday on the main channel. Its switchboard was inundated with complaints from viewers and animal rights groups. Bigazzi said that casserole of cat was a famous dish in his home region of Valdarno, Tuscany.

Asda plans to open 100 smaller format stores in the next three to five years, according to analysts at JPMorgan. In a note published yesterday, JPMorgan said Asda set out the plans at a supplier conference last week. The UK’s second-biggest supermarket also intends to open 150 non-food stores, in what would be an acceleration of the roll-out of its Asda Living format, JPMorgan said.

Sainsbury’s claims it has become the world’s biggest retailer of Fairtrade products after hitting sales of £210m in the past year. The supermarket is adding more products this week ahead of Fairtrade Fortnight in a bid to attract a growing audience of ethically minded shoppers. It hopes that Fairtrade products, along with its RSPCA-approved meats, will help to create a ’point of difference’ in an extremely competitive sector.
