 Dizzee Rascal reckons Lily Allen wants to quit music to become a farmer. The pair headlined London’s O2 Arena together this week, and the rapper has revealed Lily longs for the quiet life of the English countryside. “Lily wants to chill, grow veg and rear chickens,” he told The Mirror.

 Scientists have identified the two genes in opium poppies which are used to make codeine and morphine, two of the most important painkillers in a doctor’s armoury. The discovery opens the door to alternative ways of making the drugs which do not involve giving over vast areas of farmland to growing the flowers. One hope is to transfer the genes into microbes, which could be grown in vats and provide huge quantities of the drugs at a fraction of the cost of farming and processing the plants.

 A £2m environmental study is to be carried out in Cumbria in a bid to reduce agricultural river pollution. The Newcastle University team wants to find ways to prevent farm waste affecting water quality, while sustaining food production levels. The four-year project on the River Eden is being funded by Defra and the Environment Agency.

 Sixty jobs are to be created by Dale Farm as part of the biggest ever investment by a single company in Northern Ireland’s diary sector. Announcing the investment, Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said the £39m cash injection will benefit 2,000 dairy farmers and rural communities across the region.
