 Members of the European parliament were today accused of caving in to pressure from the food industry after plans for the compulsory introduction of "traffic light" colour-coded front of pack food labels, which would have applied in the UK, were rejected by almost 400 MEPs. Following a multimillion-pound lobbying campaign by manufacturers, the MEPs voted to block the EU from adopting the UK Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) labelling system, which uses red, amber and green symbols to indicate levels of salt, fat and other nutrients.

 Health experts will propose a new "fat tax" on junk food this week to help combat heart disease and obesity. They want the Government to slap VAT on food high in saturated fat or salt - like sausages, biscuits, butter and cheese. Medics think the move would encourage people to cut down on fatty food, linked to almost 200,000 deaths a year. Imposing the current 17.5 per cent VAT on food which is currently exempt would send prices soaring. It would mean a £1.64 pack of 12 sausages going up to £1.93 and see a £1.36 pack of butter rise to £1.60.

 Meat from a celebrated British breed of pig is the latest food to have its name protected by the European Union (EU). Gloucestershire Old Spots (GOS) pork is the newest of 42 UK products on the Protected Food Name (PFN) list. Melton Mowbray pork pies, Cornish clotted cream and Welsh lamb are some of the foods already listed. The inclusion on the list means that any product bearing the Gloucestershire Old Spots name must come from the breed.

 Halal and kosher meat will have to be labelled under new European Union rules. Millions of cows, goats and chickens are slaughtered without stunning each year in the UK under Muslim and Jewish practices, which enjoy an exemption from animal welfare laws. The RSPCA, other welfare organisations and the Government’s veterinary experts say the practice is cruel and should be ended, but another concern is that the meat re-enters the general food chain where it is unwittingly consumed by the general population.
