EFFP urges members to support new farm consultancy

The English Farming and Food Partnerships (EFFP) which, helps farmers collaborate across the supply chain, is calling on members to back proposals to invest in a newly formed agri-food consultancy.

The new consultancy business, led by the current EFFP management team, will focus on innovating and delivering commercial business solutions to farming and food businesses.

Steve Ellwood, chairman of EFFP, said: “The EFFP board believes that our proposals provide a sustainable solution for the ongoing delivery of EFFP’s original mission to champion collaboration across the farming and food industry.”

The proposals, which have already received the support of Farm Minister Jim Paice, will be put to EFFP members at a meeting towards the end of September.

EFFP was set up in 2003 as a recommendation of Sir Don Curry’s Policy Commission to work with farmers and food companies to develop more efficient and sustainable supply chains.

Business hots up at Wales’ only chilli farm

BIRDS Eye, Pinocchio’s Nose, Scotch Bonnet. These may sound like characters from an exotic fairy-tale, but they are actually chillies – and they are growing on a farm in Flintshire.

Dragon Chillies in Sealand is the only chilli farm in Wales.

It is the creation of Gary Smith, who has had a taste for the hot stuff for as long as he can remember.

The 42-year-old started the farm in Sealand Road when his wife got fed up of chillies growing in her conservatory.

Now the hobby that got him hot under the collar is a thriving business.

What with all the hoo-hah surrounding the pope’s recent British holiday, the news that Nando’s has bought the Gourmet Burger Kitchen chain for £30m may have escaped your attention. In many ways it’s the 21st-century equivalent of Little Chef absorbing Wimpy, albeit markedly more middle-class than that. Both chains specialise in upmarket fast food: the kind of place you don’t feel thoroughly ashamed to be seen in, unlike their more established and reviled mass-market competitors.
