"The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not mean all who were laughed at were geniuses. They laughed at Columbus. They laughed at Fulton. They also laughed at Bozo the clown."

PAPERS22 October 2010 The National Trust are opposing plans for a “super dairy” in Powys because it could spoil the view from Powis Castle. National Trust chiefs say farmer Fraser Jones’ proposed 1,000 dairy unit at Lower Leighton Farm could have a “significant visual impact” on Powis Castle in Welshpool. The National Trust added: “The building was designed to have a commanding view over the Severn Valley.” But Frazer Jones said other farm buildings and factories could already be seen from the castle. He also says that he intends to plant trees to screen the dairy in the village of Leighton, and he has employed an architect to illustrate what his building would look like from Powis Castle. County Times Farmers last night blockaded a Tesco’s depot in a row over milk prices. Lorries were unable to get into the Tesco distribution centre at Nursling near Southampton. Seven tractors and eight other vehicles were blocking the entrance to the site in Canberra Road which sends food to stores all over the south. The group behind the protest, Farmers for Action, is calling for the supermarket giant and its counterparts to pay a fair price for their produce. The dairy farmers from across Hampshire warned they were prepared to continue their action until police removed them. Chairman Bruce Horn said: “We cannot go on as we are at the moment. One dairy farm is closing every day in the country.” The group is demanding an extra 2-3p on every litre of milk sold to make dairy farming profitable. Tesco currently pays an average of 28.19 per litre. The Daily Echo In yesterday’s Comprehensive Spending Review, the chancellor George Osborne announced a cut to the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs of 8 per cent per annum over four years. However details released by the department reveal that the Higher Level Scheme (HLS), which helps farmers create environmental measures to protect threatened farmland birds and other wildlife, has been saved from the axe. HLS has been prioritised and extra European funding has been found to fill the gap, and help the scheme grow by 80 per cent. RSPB director of conservation Mark Avery said: “Environment secretary Caroline Spelman has done a good job in defending wildlife friendly farming against the worst of the cuts."
