With an application to build the UK’s largest dairy farm near Nocton, in Lincolnshire, due in this week, advocates of the proposal say it will substantially reduce the environmental impact of milk production in comparison to existing smaller farms.

 The farmers behind the expected 4,000 plus cow unit go as far as to suggest it will ’surpass the highest environmental standards ever seen in the UK’. This remains questionable, however, with the initial application made earlier this year having stalled because of concerns about land and water pollution resulting from the farm.

 The Environment Agency cited an ’unacceptable risk to groundwater supplies’ and a failure to show how the farmers intended safely to dispose of the estimated 180,000 tonnes of slurry expected to be produced by the cows every year.

Robert Wiseman Dairies today posted a 3.5% fall in first-half pre-tax profit as supermarkets cut milk prices. Tesco recently followed Asda in lowering its milk prices, putting pressure on suppliers. Robert Wiseman said pre-tax profit was £20.2 million for the six months to October 2, compared with £21 million last year. Revenue, however, grew about 7% to £452.8 million on volumes that were up 8%. “The current period has been dominated by the highly competitive trading environment, with the benefit of increased volumes and higher cream revenues offset by reduced milk selling prices and increased costs,” the company said. The company, which grew from Robert Wiseman Senior’s family farm in East Kilbride to supply nearly a third of Britain’s fresh milk, said it still expected its second-half profit to fall by about £7 million. Robert Wiseman shares closed at 327.7p on Friday. They have fallen 33% since the company issued a profit warning in September.
