Food inflation has usurped the economy as consumers’ biggest concern for the first time in a decade, according to a global survey released by Nielsen. Data from the market information and analytics company shows that 13 per cent of the 28,000 respondents cited increasing food prices as their biggest concern over the next six months. That is ahead of the economy, which came in at 11 per cent, and job security and health, which each made 8 per cent.

An award-winning Burnley brewery is opening new £4.3m facilities that include a brew house, visitor centre, restaurant and conference centre. Moorhouse’s Brewery produces award-winning beers such as Pendle Witches Brew and Black Cat. Its new development includes a traditional tower brewery, which will treble the amount of ale the company produces, to 1000 barrels-a-week. The expansion has led to the firm creating 17 jobs. Managing Director David Grant said: "We’re really proud of the growth of Moorhouse’s and this investment underlines our confidence in our brand, our pride in our product and our pride in Burnley.

Canadians are staying away from Chinese food imports, and buying Canadian produce instead. So far, Chinese consumers have been the ones facing the brunt of China’s food scares and poisonings, but some Canadians are worried about the risk of unsafe products making their way into the food supply here. In the past month, Chinese inspectors have reportedly seized tons of contaminated milk, pork treated with steroids that sickened hundreds of Chinese citizens, and pork treated with sodium borate to make it look like beef. In Jiangsu province, reports emerged last week of watermelon crops bursting after farmers misused a chemical growth accelerator, forchlorfenuron.
