Tractor Ted will be visiting Longleat in Warminster this weekend for a two-day farm show, with farming demonstrations, falconry, vintage tractor racing and more. Youngsters will be able to meet Tractor Ted, before watching and taking part in real life countryside activities, including show ring demonstrations, bale wrapping, and duck herding. There will also be a range of farm machinery on display, and an opportunity to handle small animals and lambs, press apples for juice and take a tractor and trailer ride around the estate.

Easton College will be offering a degree course in agriculture for the first time, with support from the University of East Anglia. A one-year masters in sustainable agriculture and food security will be run from this autumn. The cost of tuition fees will be £5,900 a year – significantly less than the £9,000 which will be charged by most universities, including UEA, from next year. College principal David Lawrence said: “This is probably the most significant step we’ve ever taken. We want to give the brightest young students the chance to study for an agricultural degree on the doorstep.” It has taken three years of planning to get formal approval to run the BSc and MSc degrees, which will be validated by the UEA and are the only agriculture degrees in the region.

A farm that will be opened up to the public is being developed in Lincoln – within the grounds of the city’s prison. The City Farm Project at HMP Lincoln will welcome its first set of animals tomorrow, when three colonies of bees are delivered. And the project’s organisers hope chickens, pigs and sheep will soon follow. Work for the scheme began in September after initial plans had been drawn up. It is hoped the farm, which is being set up in the prison grounds outside the main premises, will be completed within three years.
