New pavilion for 18,000 Royal Welsh members. A new £1m members centre, over-looking the main ring, was opened yesterday by Hywel Lloyd, show president in 2006, when Montgomeryshire was the feature county. Mr Lloyd was one of the driving forces behind the two-storey facility. Yesterday some 500 new members joined the Royal Welsh Agriculture Society, bringing the total membership to almost 18,000. Most live in Wales but, said Mr Lloyd, a growing “hard core” are from overseas.”

Crooks left a trail of destruction when they cut through a couple’s property to steal fuel from a council-run tip. The thieves drove a truck through John and Elizabeth Robertson’s hedge, crossed two of their paddocks and cut through fences to access the tip in Maldon Road, Colchester. They got away with 200 litres of diesel. Mrs Robertson, of Brickwall Farm, next to the tip, said: “It was such a thoughtless and senseless act.” The couple have put up temporary barriers in the damaged areas but do not know how much it will cost to get the damage fixed.

Food is moving up the political agenda in Wales as cottage industry production is replaced by big business and the spectre of hunger stalks the world stage. Farming leaders and politicians yesterday acknowledged the contribution of the food chain which new figures suggest is now the biggest employer in Wales. Alun Davies, deputy minister for farming, spoke of how food “defined our nation” while the Farmers Union of Wales (FUW) said politicians were finally “waking up” to the real prospect of food shortages.
