A West Virginia man is laying claim to one of the world’s smallest chicken eggs. Whether it’s a record remains to be seen. The Reverand Donnie Russell said he found the egg last month on his farm. It’s 2.1 centimetres long, or a bit bigger than a penny, and weighs 3.46 grams - a little more than one-tenth of an ounce. ’It’s really something. If you want to know the truth, I can’t put it into words,’ Mr Russell said.

A raft of farmers have responded to Government incentives to make energy from manure, waste crops and discarded food. Between 40 and 50 farmers are seeking planning permission to set up anaerobic digestion (AD) plants, which harness natural micro-organims to break down organic waste creating gas and heat which can be used to make electricity. If successful, they will double the UK’s farm plants.

Prefabricated buildings made from straw could prove a winner for farmers. A new tide of innovation is sweeping Yorkshire requiring little or no investment from farmers: houses, study centres and business parks are being built from straw. And it is not just the raw material that farmers provide. Whole farmyards are being transformed into straw-build factories with machinery, haulage and labour sometimes hired too. In 2006, when straw wall panels were required for a pioneering eco-depot for City of York Council they were built in an Easingwold farm 12 miles away.
