Farmers are being urged to be vigilant after sheep rustling incidents across the UK almost doubled in six months. The Farmers Union of Wales (FUW) says rustling has "escalated significantly in recent years". It has joined forces with the National Farmers Union (NFU) Cymru and others to launch Farm Watch to cut crime. According to NFU Mutual, the insurance wing of the National Farmers’ Union, 32,926 sheep have been stolen from farms across Britain since January.

Robert Wiseman Dairies yesterday revealed that it will increase the farm gate milk price to Wiseman Milk Group members by 1.85p per litre (ppl) from October. A spokesman for the company, which handles one-third of all the fresh milk in Britain, said the higher price reflected the continued strength in commodity markets. It also reflected the company’s need to maintain its competitive positioning so that it could secure the supplies required to meet customer demand over the winter.

Agricultural fires have kept firefighters busy across North and East Yorkshire. Crews were called to a combine harvester on fire in standing crops at Wrench Green, near Scarborough, at about 1.35pm on Monday. The fire, caused by an overheated engine caused 100 per cent fire damage to the engine compartment and extensive damage to the rest of the combine harvester. Another combine set alight at Ainderby Steeple near Northallerton at 4.55pm. Crews also tended to a grain drier which was overheating in Highgate, Selby just after 4pm. Corn chaff was lodged in the vent of a corn drier causing it to overheat. Crews used a thermal imaging camera and farm hoe to dislodge the chaff.
