Farmers in the Dungannon District have received £2.6million in payments from the European Union in the past year. The highest payment was £1.2 million, while a further six agricultural businesses received payments more than £100,000, demonstrating just how lucrative the scheme can be. There were just under 50 recipients of the grants, which have been criticised in the past as ‘a waste of money’. They included Countryside Services Ltd, based on the Moy Road, which received £1.2million as part of a rural development fund to support the local farming community.

Countryside Live’s reputation as one of the leading agricultural events of the year was underlined this weekend as the event attracted a record-breaking attendance for the third time in four years. The all-time record of 10,700 was announced last night as organisers brought the farming and rural showcase to a close. It capped off a highly successful year for the event, which saw increased family attractions and food offerings alongside the traditional cattle and horse classes.

New lobbying aimed at ensuring Welsh farmers do not lose out in a major shake-up of funding from Europe is getting under way in Brussels. The Country Land and Business Association is meeting European and Welsh government officials over CAP changes. CAP subsidises the industry and fixes prices and food production levels. Welsh farmers receive £260m from the scheme, or 80% of their income, and there is concern they could be hit.
