Farmers said they cautiously welcomed a raft of measures to help the rural economy, announced in the Autumn Statement. The measures included a reduction in the amount of inspections some farmers would need, a move to make it easier to convert derelict farm buildings into farm shops, support for rural businesses run by women and money put aside to promote rural tourism and food and drink exports.

More than three-quarters of British-grown oysters contain norovirus, research has found. The study, for the Food Standards Agency (FSA), discovered that 76 per cent of oysters tested from UK oyster growing beds had traces of the infectious bug. Although the virus was detected at only low levels in 52 per cent of the positive samples, a safe limit for norovirus has not been established. The virus can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.

The Prince of Wales has called for more ‘school farms’ where pupils grow their own food and rear livestock, while the Duchess of Cornwall wants more young women to join the Women’s Institute. Addressing young farmers in Lincolnshire, the Prince said Britain needs to grow more of our own food in order to feed the growing world population. But he said not enough young people are going into farming or horticulture. The Prince suggested that more schools set up vegetable gardens or keep pigs and hens so young people feel connected to nature and learn how to produce food.
