PAPERS15 December 2011 A farmer whose cows strayed onto a dual carriageway three times in one day has been fined. Donald Shore’s livestock caused havoc when they wandered onto the A541 Wrexham to Mold road at Pontblyddyn. Police were first called at 10.15am and found two cows grazing at the side of the road, prosecutor Matthew Ellis told Mold Crown Court yesterday. But when a third call was received about 10 cows were found at the side of the dual carriageway, with 50 cows in the field ready to follow those which had gone out onto the road. Daily Post North Wales The Government has criticised countries which are poised to flout strict new rules by continuing to keep hens in battery cages. Farming Minister Jim Paice said that there was “no excuse” for countries to fail to comply with the new rules, which comes into force on January 1. Despite British farmers spending £400m to comply, 13 European Union countries have said they will not meet the terms of the directive by the start of next month, with 50m hens estimated to still be in battery cages. Yorkshire Daily Post Supermarkets are lobbying fiercely to prevent the creation of a fair trade food ‘ombudsman’ who would protect UK farmers and producers, Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has warned. The MP claimed store executives were ‘working hard behind the scenes’ to scupper plans for a Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA), promised as part of the Government’s coalition agreement. The lobbying concerns were raised after Mr Farron and NFU president Peter Kendall met Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg to discuss a range of farming issues, including fair trade for UK farmers.
