Thieves brought New Year heartbreak to kids with a break-in at their Leeds primary school’s “farm” which led to foxes killing parent sponsored chickens. Intent on stealing the farm’s all terrain quad bike, the raiders left gaping holes in the Farsley Farfield Primary School farm enclosure and foxes got a number of young chickens who had not got to safety through the solar panel controlled chicken coop door. The farm at the 400-plus pupil school in Cote Lane, Farsley, is a horticultural educational project and involves youngsters in growing fresh food and selling it via “Veg Bag” system to locals.

The new Local Foods Suffolk project – spearheaded by rural charity Suffolk ACRE – is offering financial help to get ideas off the ground. Its grant scheme can give out awards of up to £500 to groups who demonstrate their project will benefit the community. Examples given include planting a community orchard, revamping a rundown allotment site or organising a lunch club. Tim Freathy, project co-ordinator for the west of the county, said: “There are lots of people who are out there and want to start community-based growing projects, but lack some initial funding to get things going.

A poultry farmer from Charfield has welcomed new measures to ban battery farmed hens and eggs but has expressed concern the industry could be penalised. Charles Bourn, who farms 70,000 chickens at his South End Farm was speaking as the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) poultry board chairman when he called on the government to guarantee a fair price for UK eggs. The comments come as new EU legislation, which came into affect on January 1, banned conventional battery cages.
