Farmers in south Lincolnshire could be helping to contribute as much as a quarter of renewable energy targets in future. That is the predication of the NFU chief adviser on renewable energy and climate change Dr Jonathan Scurlock, who suggests a “significant amount of land” will eventually be devoted to the production of biofuels and other energy crops. He says: “We might get to the situation where anything like a quarter is coming out of the land-based sector. That’s everything – bio energy, wind and solar.”

County Council and business leaders have welcomed the news that Derbyshire will play a leading role in shaping decisions affecting rural communities. Fourteen groups across the country have been appointed to help guide countryside policy under the Government’s new Rural and Farming Networks. Among them is the Derbyshire Economic Partnership Rural Forum, which includes representatives from Derbyshire County Council and district councils, businesses, and organisations including the National Union of Farmers, Natural England, and the Country Landowners Association.

Rural businesses in Cumbria and north Lancashire look set to miss out on a new ‘hot-line to ministers’. Neither county is represented in any of the new Rural and Farming Networks announced by Defra Minister Jim Paice. This could mean farmers and other businesses losing out on a chance to directly shape future rural policies.
