PAPERS09 February 2012 Fewer than 20,000 egg-laying hens are still in conventional cages in the UK – with the number falling every day, farming minister Jim Paice has said. Paice revealed the figure this week in a written statement to the House of Commons. Earlier this year, it emerged that half a million hens on 30 farms across the UK were still in conventional cages, despite a European Union ban on the cages coming into force on 1 January. The Grocer Parliamentarians from around the UK had a close-up look at the operations of Bradford-based supermarket Morrisons as part of a programme to familiarise MPs and peers with how the economy works on the ground. Morrisons chief executive Dalton Philips briefed the party of 11-strong cross-party group of MPs, an MEP and a peer. They visited Morrisons ‘Store of the Future’ in Kirkstall, Leeds, followed by lunch at Morrisons’ head office on Gain Lane, prepared by executive chef and head of innovation Neil Nugent. Bradford Telegraph and Argus Ceredigion farmer Maelgwyn Davies has been elected chairman of the FUW’s new arable, horticulture and cropping committee. The committee held its inaugural meeting last week at the union’s head office in Aberystwyth. First on the agenda were CAP reform proposals for crop diversification, together with biotechnology and food security. Mr Davies runs 300 pedigree Charolais cattle and 220 Welsh ewes on the family’s 350-acre farm. He also has 65-70 acres of barley, wheat and maize for cattle feed. In 1995 he diversified by setting up a go-cart track.
