Farming must reduce the scourge of workplace deaths, said the country’s largest union, Unite. It urged delegates at the NFU conference this week to put safety top of the agenda by backing moves to introduce roving safety representatives to safeguard workers. Unite said that one in five workplace deaths happen on Britain’s farms and with almost one death per week, agricultural workers are more likely to be killed at work than in any other industry. The union, which represents large number of farmworkers, has criticised the government failure to do more to reduce the death and injury toll.

Farmers in Devon should stay with farming and leave energy-production to someone else, a leading rural campaign group has said. About 150 wind turbines are currently proposed for the county, including many single turbines on farmland. Penny Mills, from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) in Torridge, north Devon said farms should be just used for agriculture. She said: "They should be diversifying into agricultural matters. Their job is to provide food not to generate power. This countryside is here now. We can’t ruin it."

Peter Kendall, President of the National Farmers Union, said ongoing drought in the South East and Anglia, the “bread basket of Britain”, will cut yields and force up prices. “As sure as night follows day if it doesn’t rain, food prices will go up. I can guarantee you that,” he said. “If there is less water across bigger areas of northern Europe food will cost more money.” Drought-afflicted areas need 120 per cent of normal rainfall between now and March to avoid drought but the Met Office is forecasting a dry period.
